Medicare
What are the IRMAA income brackets?
Six income tiers, set from your tax return two years earlier, each adding a surcharge to your Part B and Part D premiums.
The income-related monthly adjustment amount uses modified adjusted gross income from the return filed two years ago — so this year's premium reflects a return you filed long before you enrolled. Cross a bracket threshold by a single dollar and the whole surcharge for that tier applies; it is a cliff, not a slope.
Because the figures change annually, the current thresholds and surcharges live in our calculator as clearly labelled sample figures rather than being repeated here. If a one-off event pushed your income up — a property sale, a retirement account conversion, a redundancy payment — a life-changing event appeal can have the surcharge reconsidered.
An estimate for planning, not a quote. Medicare and the Marketplace set your real figures.
