Can veterans have both VA benefits and Medicare?

VA health benefits cover care at VA facilities. Medicare covers care in the civilian system. Neither pays the other's bills, so a veteran with VA benefits alone has no cover at the nearest hospital in an emergency, and a veteran with Medicare alone loses access to VA pharmacy pricing.

The decision people most often get wrong is delaying Part B because VA benefits feel like enough. VA enrolment does not count as the kind of coverage that protects you from a Part B late enrolment penalty, so a delay can cost a permanent surcharge.
